Police accused of illegal car bugging
Saturday 19th September 2009, 2:59PM BST.
THE States of Jersey police broke the law by bugging a hire car that was used to plan the alleged £1m drug importation plot, it has been claimed.
Late yesterday afternoon, the jury in the drugs conspiracy trial was told by defence Advocate Stephen Baker that despite being denied permission from the French and Belgian authorities, the States police bugged a vehicle in mainland Europe.
They did so, according to the prosecution, so that they could record conversations being held in Amsterdam about a plan to bring around £1m worth of cannabis to Jersey.
