Abseiling in St Helier
Monday 21st September 2009, 12:16PM BST.

Vernon Tomes was among the abseilers
ABOUT 150 daredevil Islanders abseiled down Cyril Le Marquand House yesterday to raise funds for a cancer charity.
The Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway, and event organiser Carol Rafferty, were first to tackle the Ultimate Plunge in aid of Cancer Research UK Jersey.
Miss Rafferty said: ‘He was very good at it as he had experience from his days in the military. Having said that I was concentrating so hard on what I was doing that I didn’t see too much of him but others did.’
In perfect still and warm weather conditions another 148 people bravely stepped over the ledge of the ninth floor of the tallest building in town and descended at varying speeds.
It is hoped that the abseil, was run by outdoor adventure activity specialists Jersey Adventures, will have raised £40,000.
