The Sand man: St Lawrence carpenter Andy Coutanche (00795536)
THE creator of a stunning design that appeared on Plémont beach on Saturday is a carpenter from St Lawrence.
Following yesterday’s appeal for readers to get in touch if they knew who he was, it can today be revealed that he is Andy Coutanche.
‘I had seen crop circles and the Led Zeppelin album cover and I just thought I could do that in the sand,’ he said. ‘I started doing it in Jersey about a year ago. I did a couple in New Zealand a few years ago on the beach, but they were only small ones.
‘I used string for the first few, but I found that it got knotted. I use an old farm rake, not a leaf rake. I believe it belonged to my grandfather. I did the one on Saturday freehand. It took between 40 and 45 minutes.’
Find out in tomorrow’s JEP exactly how the designs are created with a step-by-step guide by Mr Coutanche.
