Residents’ group backs housing on town park

BUILDING houses on the Millennium Town Park site is a good compromise, according to a group of town residents.

The Town Residents’ Rejuvenation Association, who campaigned strongly against the proposal for a multi-storey car park on Ann Court, is backing proposals in the North of Town Masterplan.

Chairwoman Laura Storey is still encouraging the public to comment on the document but agrees that delivering the town park at no cost to the taxpayer would be beneficial.

The masterplan, which was published last week, proposes building housing around the edge of the Gas Place and Talman site car parks so that the developer pays for the park and underground car park. It also proposes building housing, a public square and subterranean car park at Ann Court.

Laura Storey believes building houses on the Millennium Town Park site is “a good compromise”?

A good compromise on what? The original plan of NOT building houses on the site? Is Miss Storey even old enough to remember the original plan being proposed, or being petitioned for by the public? Did she sign the petition?

Sometimes people have to to do what is RIGHT, no matter how difficult, not take the route of compromise because it’s easier. It’s a matter of principle. The public voted in their THOUSANDS for a town park with NO housing. It would be shameful for that to now be cast aside and forgotten with an excuse so weak as “compromise”.

Until I read about Miss Storey’s campaign it was only local politicians whom I’d lost faith in. Now I find myself losing faith in the local public too.

if the development proceeds, it will be a town green, not a park.

No Nellie, you’re not missing anything, but someone else is purposely ignoring it!

I cant believe everyone is still only in the “talking” stages of the town park. This has been going on for how many years now. Sod the housing and just get on with the park. God knows its been a long time coming.

no to houses just park park park

It would be far better to build tall flats at the east end of the site to hide the gas tanks – have the bedrooms facing that side (where it would be quiet)and the living rooms facing the park.

Housing around the park would be a nightmare – children and teenagers screaming all day – awful- and the park in the centre will be tiny – a total waste of time.

I still can’t understand how they refuse to dig out the contaminated soil at the gas works but build flats on top of toxic ash at the waterfront…..am I missing something here?

The opinion expressed is that of some members of the Town Residents’ Rejuvenation Association together with the views expressed to us from a large number of the 3,500 people who to date have signed the petition against the proposed 800 space multi-storey car park at Ann Court.

On a personal level, yes, I signed the Town Park petition back in the 90s, and I did so on the understanding that there would be underground parking to replace the surface parking being lost.

Yippee!! The original plan passed by a whisker due to a mistake in voting. Finally the States have passed something the people asked for. It only took 15 years. Well done Deputy Southern for bringing the ammendment to the States and a whole bunch of members who did not vote in the normal en masse, block. A stumbling point was the cost. Would not have been an issue if the exchange rate fiasco for the energy from waste plant mistake had not been made.

I’m so sorry Nellie, I cut and pasted the name on the post, I never even bothered to read it, I was more interested in your comment than anything else. Please forgive me, I’m mortified.
