Russell seals the victory

A FINE lobbed goal by striker Bradley Russell secured Grouville a 1-0 preliminary round Wheway Cup victory against Trinity at Les Quennevais last night.

Russell latched on to a long pass and with Trinity goalkeeper Jimmy Styles coming off his line Russell lobbed him from distance with the ball bouncing up and hitting the underside of the crossbar before crossing the goal-line.

Russell’s strike came midway through the second half and although Trinity worked hard towards the finish they were reduced to ten players when Lee Jones was sent off following a challenge on Jody MacCarthy.

Grouville manager Ian Horswell said: ‘We’ve not kept a clean sheet since playing Beeches in the Charity Cup early season so we’ve been working hard on tightening up defensively.

‘It was much improved and although Trinity had good possession their main threat came via set pieces and crosses which goalkeeper Garry Lloyd did well with.’
