THE Channel Islands surfing team may be one of the oldest but they are the ‘dark horse’ in the European Championships.

That is the view of CI team manager Roley McMichael who believes his surfers can challenge for the top spot in many events.

With the Eurosurf returning to Jersey for the first time since 1983 the opening ceremony is being held tomorrow with the competition getting under way in St Ouen’s Bay on Sunday – surf permitting.

McMichael said: ‘We may have the oldest team in the world, our youngest competitor in the Open event is 32 and I would be surprised if there was anyone else that age from the other teams, but they are all fit and experienced.

‘We have four or five surfers who have represented Great Britain in World events and I feel we could be the dark horse in this competition. The French are always the favourites because they’ve won it about eight times in the last ten years.’
