ISLANDERS living in the First Tower area could soon get some relief from the Bellozanne smell.

States Members voted on Friday to spend £1 million on work to improve the waste facilities, despite opposition by ministers. The amendment was proposed by St Helier Deputy Ben Fox.

The ministers had wanted to stall the project and cut the funding from the Business Plan for 2010. However, the amendment to restore the £1 million in spending plans was passed by 31 votes to nine, with one abstention.

The sewage works are not far from First Tower and many residents there have complained about the smell. Three years ago the States voted by 50-1 to fund work to cover the sewage treatment area so that they would not have to put up with bad odours, but the work has stalled, and ministers proposed removing £1 million allocated to the programme in 2010.
