We must save Plémont

CONGRATULATIONS to the Jersey Evening Post for their comment ‘Balance on the coastline’ on 17 August. The JEP and the National Trust are both working hard to protect and preserve the remaining beauty of our Island, especially the coastal areas.
Since the beginning of the last century, we have welcomed many people who came and made their homes here in Jersey and many of them became wonderful benefactors.
One only has to think of Howard Davis Park, the Coronation Park, the FB Fields and the wonderful Lalique interior of St Matthew’s Church and many, many more. Just imagine Jersey without these bequests. They are a reminder of people who appreciated the Island and its inhabitants and greatly helped preserve its natural beauty. We shall never forget them and their generosity.
It is so sad that we are at odds over Plémont. 10,347 residents have already signed to save these lovely cliffs which have graced our Island for thousands of years in a beautiful natural environment. T
he foolish mistake made just after the Second World War resulted in a blot on our landscape which must be removed and the land returned to its former glory. Surely, the States Members could put together a plan for compulsory purchase with a fair but firm land deal.
Houses can be built elsewhere in the Island but not on this exceptional coastline. The States own many properties including the former Jersey College for Girls and Haut de la Garenne, both important sites, couldn’t these sites be used for housing? It may be difficult, but it must be done.
