JERSEY police ‘conspired to pervert the course of justice’ and are ‘liars and cheats’, the jury in the £1m drugs conspiracy trial were told yesterday.
As the trial draws to a close, defence advocate Stephen Baker warned the jury that they were entering ‘a murky world’ where the police ‘lie and cheat’.
The lawyer, representing Curtis Warren of Liverpool, completed his closing speech yesterday and lawyers representing the other five accused were expected to be finished some time today.
The men, two of whom are from Jersey, are accused of plotting to import £1m worth of cannabis from Amsterdam. During the trial, which has seen unprecedented levels of security around the Royal Court, it was revealed that the police had secretly photographed some of the accused and bugged phone boxes around the Island to record them.
