A HOSPITAL surgeon has revealed the shocking rise in facial injuries caused by alcohol-fuelled violence on the streets of St Helier.

Dr Chandrasekhar, an associate specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, took the unusual step of speaking publicly after the number of Islanders receiving treatment, including reconstructive surgery, rocketed by 50% in the last six months.

The problem has become so severe that he is now urging States police officers to show schoolchildren CCTV footage of the street violence in an effort to turn them away from weekends of binge drinking.

Dr Chandrasekhar told the JEP: ‘There has been a sudden increase in these sorts of facial injuries in the last six months, and some of the injuries are quite horrific. There has to be some sort of education for the children about what can happen if you go out and attack someone just for fun. Perhaps they don’t realise what happens to the person they have just whacked.’

Barry Taylor, acting deputy chief officer of the States police, said: ‘The information provided by Dr Chandrasekhar regarding the increase in facial injuries is to be expected, given the rise in the number of serious assaults already reported extensively by the local media.’
