Get real, States Members – people won’t leave their cars at home unless there are alternatives
Saturday 3rd October 2009, 2:59PM BST.
From John Fox.
ONCE again I find myself writing to you on the subject of leaving our cars at home (JEP, 30 September). It would seem that my previous letter fell on deaf ears in the States (as usual, I suppose).
I have tried on several occasions to find somewhere to park my scooter in town. If our States Members responsible for parking were to get out of their offices and check the cycle and motorcycle parking spaces available during work time in town, they would see that they are totally inadequate.
There has been double-parking to the point that some cycles could not be moved until those parked in front were moved first (Union Street).
I had an appointment at the Hospital at 10 am recently. There was no parking allowed for
motorcycles in the Hospital basement section. Parking in the public section of the motorcycle area was full to overflowing. Answer? Take bike home and come back with car. No problem!
To walk from the west of the Island would take nearly all day, even if you are very fit. Take a bus? Yes, but allow half a day and expect to be tired when you do eventually get home.
The reality is that people who do live within a mile or so of the town centre would not find it too much of a hardship to walk on fine days. But for the rest?
States Members must get real before they ask people to abandon their transport. It won’t happen without real alternatives in place.
