NEARLY 20 homes were evacuated as a wildfire tore across headland in St Ouen and St Peter on Saturday.

At its height it needed every firefighter in Jersey to bring it under control. Around one square kilometre of dry headland was destroyed and two properties were damaged, as strong winds helped the fire to spread rapidly.

An out-of-control bonfire in a private garden is understood to have started the blaze at around 2 pm and it spread to neighbouring fields. The Fire and Rescue Service, which was 12 men down because of a training course, had extinguished it by midnight.

Retained and Airport firefighters helped to make up the 40-strong team, many of whom were tackling the blaze for ten hours straight.

Chief Fire Officer Mark James said that the fire pushed his team to the limits, especially with a dozen full-time members undertaking specialist training in Devon.
