In search of a family bible

ROY Davies, of Wales, is hoping to trace a bible which he thinks might contain information to help him with his family research and which he believes was last owned by a man living in Jersey.

‘I have been researching the Welsh side of my family history and my uncle tells me that there was a family bible and that the last known person to own the bible was Walter Dale from Jersey,’ explains Roy in an e-mail.

‘Therefore I am trying to trace the family bible, which according to my uncle, was contained in a bible chest, and am interested in any information it may contain about family births, marriages, deaths etc.

‘The information it will contain relates to the Rees side of my family. I have traced this line but along the way have had to make some assumptions and therefore am hoping the bible would help me greatly in my research.’

Walter Dale was a son of his grandmother’s sister and died about ten years ago aged around 60. He was born in 1905 in Hillside, Pontyberem, South Wales, the son of Edith (Hannah Edith) Rees and Cyril Dale. They moved to Jersey in the 1930s where Cyril was in management and Edith was a teacher.

The last known address Roy has for Edith and Cyril is Hillside, Wellington Road, Jersey. He does not have Walter’s last address and has no idea what happened to the family bible.
‘Although Walter lived for most of his life in Jersey I believe he and his parents lived for a time with his great Aunt Winnie (Winifred) Rees who lived in Aberdare South Wales and who in turn later visited them in Jersey.

‘Walter I believe originally worked in sales and according to my uncle, his last venture was running a dry cleaning business in Jersey in association with his second wife Joe. Walter and Joe had three children – Nicki, Claire and James.
