Leonis captain Ben Murray lifts the Gold Cup, with help from special guest Sugar Ray Leonard and sponsor Eddie Kirkup of Fitzgerald Estates (00807792)
Jersey Leonis boxers came so close to a whitewash victory over a South of England Select last night as they stormed in to lift the Firzgerald Estates Gold Cup
Run as part of the Sugar Ray Leonard evening at the Hotel de France, coach and cornerman Tony Burt was understandably delighted with the 4-1 victory over strong amateur opponents.
‘It was a good night’s effort from the boys. It could have been five, but Shane (Goggin) held off a little too much in his first round.’
Leonis lightweight Boyd Munroe, in the third bout, won the Boxer of the Night Award for his excellent show in a unanimous points victory over the all-action Shane Western.
The winners were presented with their medals by the star of the night, boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, who delighted an audience of around 500 sports fans at the Hotel de France with a talk and question and answer session.
