ISLANDERS who have to post items to the UK are being advised to do so as soon as possible to avoid the effects of a national postal strike.

No strike action is expected before 19 October at the earliest, and as a result Jersey Post are advising anyone who needs to send an item by normal post to do so quickly.

The States-owned utility says it will be implementing ‘contingency plans’ if a national strike by Royal Mail workers goes ahead. The general manager of postal services, Andy Jéhan, said: ‘We have a range of contingencies available. There has been limited action going on for 15 weeks and we have managed to minimise disruption.’

Asked if Jersey Post would be prepared to use private-sector operators other than the Royal Mail to deliver in the UK, he said: ‘We will keep our options open.’

These UK postal workers have the same mindset as our states workers – they think they are immune to the current economic situation. If they strike businesses will move to other couriers and not come back, they are cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

They should buckle under and ride the storm or they won’t have any jobs to strike with. They are like 1970′s trade unionists.

If these private sector operators are providing the same service for the same cost I suggest Jersey Post stick with them for good.

If it is going to cost Jersey post more to use these private operators I hope they send the bill to the national postal unions or UK Government. I don’t see why the people of Jersey should have pay for an increase in service costs, whether it be passed back to the public by putting a penny on a stamp or through the States owned company absorbing it into their profits, for a strike that has nothing to do with us.

Both the Royal Mail and the Communications Workers Union are cutting their corporate throats and will probably bleed to death.

The union will have to learn that it cannot squeeze money from an employing company that is struggling to survive.

The Royal Mail, for its part, must watch out for foreign, European, mail handling companies that can demonstrably offer a better, cheaper and quicker service.

The victims in this story is the British public, who cannot take the risk of anything committed to a post box getting lost.
