CI managing director Mark Bright: ‘Decision does not relate to profits’

THIRTY-three bank staff were told this week that they will lose their jobs as the business of Ansbacher (Channel Islands) is to be moved to Switzerland.

The workers, several of whom have worked for the bank for more than 20 years, learned on Wednesday that they are to be made redundant. A further 16 posts will go in Guernsey.

Ansbacher is owned by Qatar National Bank and a statement said that the decision had been taken as part of a strategic review.

CI managing director Mark Bright said that the bank would continue to operate from its Britannia Place offices in Bath Street for several months as it winds down business.

And Shona Pitman is demanding pay increases for civil servants whilst this type of thing is happening, not forgetting the almost 1,000 already out of work.

The JDA should hold their heads in shame. To demand pay increases at the expense of tax payers during recession is economic lunacy.

If the decision to exit Jersey does not relate to profits then does it relate to another factor such as our dear regulator? Is this the start of a trend?

Shona Pitman and others demand pay rises for states employees where not one person has lost their job, yet i don’t hear them coming up with measures to help keep jersey competitive to ensure we don’t lose more banks etc that pay the taxes!!

All her ideas makes jersey less competitive in the real world.

    She should resign

That’s because despite what the JDA say they want to see an end to the finance industry (but stupidly don’t realise their £50k salary is unsustainable if they succeed – another example of financial illiteracy they seem to have). As for wanting an increase in States worker salary I think they’re just trying to make their own decision to increase their salary look better and win some States worker votes in the process.

Also interesting is how most of the Deputies slag off departments for incompetence etc… yet when it comes to their argument of a wage increase all States workers are wonderful and deserve it for their hard work.
