The tenth best beach in the world

With a stunning shot like this, it is no wonder that Sky Travel put Portelet into the world’s top ten beaches . . . but other pictures tell a different story, such as those of a dilapidated hut and the building site on the headland

PORTELET has been voted one of the top ten beaches in the world.

The St Brelade beauty spot was ranked alongside palm-lined tropical paradise beaches in the Maldives, Hawaii, Cuba, Fiji and Thailand by holiday agent Sky Travel.

It was the only place in Europe to make it onto the list – even though Beauport is just around the corner.

Sky Travel’s web editor Kevin Ashbridge said that he had visited the beach and was blown away by its beauty.

    Magnolia Man

Reporting this otherwise excellent news may come back to plague the people of Jersey.

It will not be long before some multi-millionaire seeks (and all too easily obtains) permission to build a large and obtrusive house in Portelet.

I am sorry Magnolia Man without some multi- millionare and his friends Jersey would be classed as a third world countrey.

There’s one there already,Magnolia Man. Built long before anyone worried about such things.

Furthermore, for many years the owner at the time denied public access to much of the headland.

magnolia man, go to the end of noirmont point, look down in to portlet bay on your right, then look at the headland above the bay, thake a pair of binoculars and have a good look.

the derelict cafe on the beach is a eyesore, on this beach.
and hopefully the public access to this beach is carved in stone

No offence to Portlet but perhaps the man from Sky actually visited Plemont but was using one of those misprinted maps!

“I am sorry Magnolia Man without some multi- millionare and his friends Jersey would be classed as a third world countrey.”

That’s precisely it. As Jersey is now practically dependent on one “industry”, i.e. finance, it is in very severe risk of becoming just that@ a third world country.

Incidentally, at least one “third world country” – India – is fast overtaking many other “developed nations”.

Watch out, Jersey! Complacency can kill.

Having travelled through Udupi,Karnataka, albeit nearly ten years ago, I would say that there’s still a bit of catching up for India to do.

India has plenty going for itself, Vijay, especially now that many people can work from home via the internet. There are some lovely places to live and, to stay on topic, some beautiful beaches – some with surf well in excess of St Ouen’s.

All the same, life in India is somewhat more risky than in Jersey. Consider the sad case of the young Jerseyman who lost his life in India earlier this year, very probably because the correct treatment was not available.

India also has a different attitude to litter. Again a lot off catching up in order to overtake Jersey’s excellent track record.

Unless there is a huge change in the world order, Jersey is likely to remain near the top of the first world ranking for our lifetimes at least.

What non sense Portelet is probabaly at it’s most untended and neglected in the past 50 years or so ..someone has their beer goggles on…it should be brought back up to it’s former natural glory and I hope is is bought back up to scratch in that “Driftwood” way that was it’s original charm..and not in a Foul glass and aluminium Cohenesque way…keep it simple…..

Perhaps Magnolia man could pop down to Portelet and paint that hut that’s delapidated.
