Victory in first round for Cann

JERSEY badminton star Elizabeth Cann proved she is on the road to recovery from injury as she beat Scotland’s Susan Egelstaff in the first round of the Denmark Badminton Open today.

It was a brilliant 21-15, 21-13 win for Cann, the world number 42, against a player ranked six places higher than herself and who beat her to the Commonwealth bronze medal in Melbourne 2006. Cann next takes on either Sophia Hansson or the No 7 seed Adriyanti Firdasari.

Jersey interest also lies in the doubles events with Mariana Agathangelou and ladies’ partner Jillie Cooper taking on Sweden’s Emelie Lennartsson and Emma Wengberg, and then paired with Robin Middleton in the mixed event, taking on the No 4 seeds, India’s Diju Valiyaveeti and Jwala Gutta.
