Let’s stamp out all this enjoyment

From Jonathan Perrée.
I AGREE with your columnist Paula Thelwell and I am fully behind her demand to stop, and I quote, ‘closing Island highways and byways’.
So far this year the road in front of my flat has been closed on at least three occasions, excluding times when all those noisy chaps with their Blues and Twos whizz past.
One fine Thursday afternoon in August, Victoria Avenue seemed to have been taken over by hundreds of people all dressed up in strange costumes, marching bands and large floats, I was that stunned I had to sit and watch all afternoon with a cold Muscadet. Then stone me, if they didn’t do it all over again the next night!
In September there was obviously fog at the Airport as some mad flyers were trying to land on the beach; the queue for check-in stretched all the way from West Park to First Tower. I had friends round just to watch!
When the marathon closed Route de St Aubin, did I get a note informing me that access to my flat was going to be curtailed? No. Do I get any notice of when the Avenue will close and thus clog up the Inner Road? Nope.
On only one occasion have I had a letter dropped off and that was by the Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club. How very decent and very polite.
So I agree, let’s not close any roads at all and stamp out this nasty thing called enjoyment!
