£10m will be well spent
Friday 23rd October 2009, 3:00PM BST.
From Chris Whitworth.
CHRISTINE Herbert’s column (JEP, 10 October) referring to Senator Maclean and the ‘Ring Binder Gate’ episode did not take into account the fact that States Members may sometimes vote against their true intentions, if they think it will win them public approval while not affecting the end result.
That said I can only hope that Senator Maclean is thoroughly ashamed of himself for recently announcing that he had voted the wrong way for the town park funding, particularly as it was St Helier District No 2 voters who originally elected him as Deputy.
Nevertheless, having recently participated in the marvellous Sunday at the Millennium Park event, with the sun shining, music playing and children having fun, this usually drab area of town came alive and it was obvious to all those attending throughout the day, that this is an ideal place for such a facility. Even the local politicians who attended had smiles on their faces (I counted nine Deputies and two Senators).
As this area is within the most highly populated part of the Island, it came as little surprise to constantly hear from people totally opposed to the idea of more buildings and occupants. In fact the idea of building on any part of the site (apart from toilets and the odd cafe) was a complete and definite no-no from everyone I spoke to.
For a park to be successful, natural entrances need to be created from all directions in order to allow people to cut-through. Therefore creating cul-de-sacs with large perimeter developments will definitely not achieve the desired result.
To conclude, what stood out even more than the smiling politicians were the walls surrounding the park, adorned with hundreds of pictures and wishes from the Island’s children. I am now even more convinced that the £10 million will be money well spent and look forward to seeing the park in its entirety.
The children’s pictures said far more than anyone can put into words, therefore to any politician still preferring to see developments on this site, I have one question:
Who on this Island do you represent?

This won’t be £10m well spent. It will be more like £20m by the time you’ve added inflation, the additional costs to sort out alternative parking and the issues surrounding the toxic earth that lies below the park.
The fact we have Howard Davis 10 minutes walk up the road and the Parade and Peoples park 10 minutes walk down the road, not to mention a number of other nice parks around the Island and natural areas of beauty such as beaches and sand dunes proves this is a nice to have and not a necessity. Those who want the park should agree to foot the extra 2% GST needed to pay for it in 2010… and then pay for the ongoing maintenance costs.
There are many ways the £10m can be well spent… in the current climate building another park isn’t one of them.
