THE Fire Station Open Day proved to be a big hit with Islanders on Sunday.

Over 1,200 adults and children took the opportunity to learn about the busy and varied life of a firefighter.

The event particularly attracted families and among the most popular activities was the colouring zone, which was busy all day with children using their artistic skills to crayon pictures of fire appliances and other equipment.

Also a major attraction was the zone offering the opportunity to crawl through a smoke-filled inflatable house with only the ability to feel the way to safety. The children particularly enjoyed squirting a hose at a house where artificial flames flapped about and disappeared when hit with water.

There was a chance to dress up in firefighter gear and have a photograph taken, and hundreds of children enjoyed climbing into the fire appliances and the inshore rescue launch.

Community fire safety manager Marc Le Cornu tsaid that they were delighted with the response from the public, who had shown a great interest in their work.’
