Old-fashioned discipline

Wednesday 28th October 2009, 3:00PM GMT.

From Don McGregor, retired head teacher, Le Rocquier School.
THE missing element in today’s society is discipline.

Stop a moment and look at our society. Governments have been shown to be corrupt because the leaders have failed to discipline their members.

The European government created a Bill of Human Rights and Children’s Rights (no demand for acting responsibly before being given those rights). These are laws set in stone without understanding the eventual consequences.

If the child totally disobeys its parents or the teachers or the police what are you allowed to do about it?

What! Smack your very naughty child’s bottom? To the ‘tower’ with you!
Le Rocquier School opened without corporal (physical (caning)) punishment, yet discipline was firm and accepted by students and parents.

Those same students often recall their school days to me and their teachers of their time and how they wish their children could have enjoyed the same firm discipline.

Governments of the world must be made to realise that parents must be allowed to discipline their own children.

That loving, firm upbringing will then pass through to the schools and that good discipline will allow and encourage good education to take place and eventually create happy societies.

The comments above although useful should be at the begging of a huge public debate chaired by professionals and encluding parents and members who wish to engage. We seem not to want too address the problem seriously. We continue with sound bites and nothing more.the solutions are out their but who will give the time for a proper dabate once and for all

#1 Well said. No-one is bothering to actually hold a public meeting to decide what is needed for Jersey! Ignore the UK, we want discipline and we can choose to break the UK mold and actually have it.

We could of course start by instilling some self-respect in our schools and stopping the girls dressing like prostitutes. It’s cheap, it’s tacky, and I don’t care if it is their right to dress that way because frankly someone inclined towards attacking them won’t care! It’s time we made kids realise that while they should be able to dress the way they want there is a need to use common sense and realise that not everyone is a good person!

We are responsible for our own safety.
