The opening show of High School Musical lived up to audience expectations, with one young critic claiming: ‘That show was the best thing in the world – ever!’

Co-director of the production Michelle Parker was overwhelmed by the success and is pleased that the hard work put in by younger members of the Jersey Amateur Dramatic Club has paid off so spectacularly.

‘We had lots of lovely people in the audience – they really made an effort and lots had come dressed in costume, including Wild Cat cheerleaders complete with pompoms,’ she said.

‘All the singing was very successful, the four part harmony worked really well and everyone was joining in at the end,’ said Michelle. ‘The team were all on the ball and the cheers were deafening afterwards. People were saying how wonderful it was.’

‘There were also lots of excited little girls screaming – one boy in particular got a lot of attention, the Jack Scott character. He’s the school announcer (played by Matthew Keyword, 13) and he’s turning into a bit of a heart-throb.’

The stage show is based on the Disney film series and tells the story of two teenagers from the school’s rival cliques – Troy Bolton, captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, the beautiful but brainy transfer student. Both decide to audition for the lead parts in their school musical, which turns their world, and the school, upside down as friends and foes try to destroy their dreams.

Michelle and her co-director chose to put on their show at Haute Vallée School which means that the story ties in very nicely with the venue.

The final performances take place at Haute Vallée School tonight and tomorrow. For further details call 871996.
