EVERY time the cost of public services is mentioned, we are reminded of the high quality of services provided by the States of Jersey. Unfortunately nobody ever mentions what those services include.

A few years ago, the States were going to publish a list of all the services they provide, together with the numbers of staff involved and the cost of each service. I have never seen this list, so find it hard to decide which services are essential, which are a luxury and which could be provided by other agencies.

Until a list is published, how can we have an informed debate about what services we the taxpayers would like the States to provide, and, more importantly in these cash-strapped times, which ones we no longer want the States to provide?

With all of the investment the States have made in accounting software in the last few years, this information must be available with a few clicks of a mouse.
