Another carbuncle on our coastline

Monday 2nd November 2009, 2:59PM GMT.

From Trevor Green.
THE latest carbuncle to appear on our coastline is to be seen at St Catherine’s Bay near the RNLI boat station.

It is a ‘Hybrid House’, whatever that is. This building has been built on the Amy site and is totally insensitive to the area.

The Planning department has caused many Islanders problems when they stipulate that such a building or extension is not in keeping with the area, calling on the claim that it has to be ‘a sensitive development’.

In this case sensitivity went out the window. The so-called Hybrid House is steel and wood with a wave-like tin roof. No consideration has been given to how it blends in with the area and it’s built right next to a Jersey round tower. It’s another carbuncle on the shoreline.

How such a building could have been passed by Senator Cohen and his planners is beyond comprehension.

Senator Cohen, you can add another carbuncle to your list – sorry, a Hybrid carbuncle.

I can only assume that planning rules are only for some people.

I recently passed a house out near Le Braye that was clearly quite new but stuck out like a sore thumb. It was in no way sympathetic to its surroundings.

So it seems there are those who can do whatever they want, then there are the rest of us.

The Jersey Round Tower next to this new house probably looked totally out of place when it was first built, as did a lot of historic buildings, and we now cherish and protect them.

However, we can’t live in the past. With a metal roof and lots of glass, this is clearly going to be a very contemporary new beach house which might actually be a really nice design – we’ll have to wait until it’s finished to know.

Leah, I know the house you mean near le Braye – I think that one looks really good.

Just think the Jersey Round Tower next door could end up being demolished because it has been spoilt by the carbuncle next door.

I must admit I was under the impression that Amy’s House was protected. Must have been mistaken does anyone know if it was the case?

Mind you I will be glad when this two year project is finally finished. It has taken a big chunk of the public parking away for the last two summers. I never saw the need for this myself. Nevermind we can’t have developers being put out can we? Better inconvenience Joe Public instead then. It also makes pulling out from that car park dangerous as you are unsighted till you are well into the road. I am surprised no one has had an accident there yet.

I also notice the carbuncle, as I see it, at La Coupe still isn’t finished. How many years has that been ongoing now? It must be at three if I remember correctly. How many more years before its finished?

#2 I like it too. My point is that it seems very much to be one rule for some and another for others!

So, I would like to know, (cause there will be a day when I decide to put an extension on a house, or even build a new house) exactly who is it I have to brown nose for a few years before I can get plans approved?

Rules are rules so the only way I can see that they differ for some than for others is if it’s really, in part, down to who you know.
