TAXPAYERS should not have to fund the new £100m depositor compensation scheme, according to a Scrutiny panel.

The Economic Affairs Scrutiny panel have tabled amendments to the scheme – which will be debated in the States this week – which would remove a proposed £35m liability from public funds, and place the whole £100m burden on a levy from banks.

Further amendments by the panel would also extend the scheme to cover not just personal bank accounts, but also accounts held by small businesses – and would set up a £20m standing fund from bank levies, with any claims over that amount to be met by additional levies.

The panel, led by Deputy Mike Higgins, suspended the debate on the proposal earlier in the year pending a review.
