Royal visit trowel goes up for auction

The silver and ivory mason’s trowel was presented to the then Duchess of Kent when she visited the Island in 1948
A MASON’S trowel with both royal and Jersey connections is going under the hammer at Christies’ auction house in London later this month.
The silver and ivory tool was presented to the then Duchess of Kent, Princess Marina, when she visited the Island in 1948 and used by her to lay the foundation stone of the Nurses’ Hostel at the General Hospital. It is expected to make around £200.
The trowel is one of 336 lots, including silver and porcelain objects as well as furniture and ephemera, being put up for sale by the current Duke of Kent and his brother, Prince Michael.
In all, the items are expected to raise around £1 million at the auction on 20 November.
Another lot, an 1815 George III silver sauce tureen, also has an Island link.

The Bailiwick of Jersey is probably unique, in that it has no less than a dozen thriving Masonic Lodges.
These lodges do sterling work for the local community, raising considerable amounts for island charities.
During the Nazi occupation, the island’s Lodges were suppressed on direct orders from Adolf Hitler. The Masonic Temple was looted, with nearly all the furniture and fittings being shipped off to Berlin.
