This terrible hum
Saturday 7th November 2009, 2:59PM GMT.
From Madeline Bates.
THIS terrible hum has kept me awake on many occasions, during the past five years. I am a very light sleeper, which probably explains why some people hear it and others don’t.
It can’t be mobile phone masts, as I had one pointing directly at my bedroom window for 18 months, yet the hum had been going on long before that, and I still hear it sometimes, even though the mast has since been removed. Not only that, it doesn’t occur every night.
I think the most likely source is some sort of vibration emitting from the French nuclear processing plant at Cap de la Hague. After all, we are only 15 miles away, so it is a possibility.

BIRD WATCH 2012

The 11th Great Garden Bird Watch took place over the weekend, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February. JEP readers were asked to get on board to help monitor bird life in the Island.
The more obvious source is a trawler working close to the coast, or a coaster or ferry on a night sailing.

Not if it’s 24/7, Nick
It has to be some sort of machinery that runs fulltime, but the owner is unlikely to own up to it.
