AUTUMN storms have threatened to take the sparkle out of this weekend’s fireworks displays after one major event was cancelled and another was left hanging in the balance.

The St Martin’s bonfire and fireworks display, which was due to take place tonight has been cancelled and re-arranged for next Saturday after forecasters warned of strong winds and showers.

And organisers of the display at Les Creux Country Park in St Brelade were due to make a final decision this morning.

Organiser Leighton Jenkins yesterday said that if it was cancelled it would be rearranged for tomorrow. He urged Islanders to phone the event information hotline on 662566 after 11 am.

A number of small and private events were also believed to have been cancelled because of strong winds, which were expected to hit force six today with some gusts up to 40 mph.

The strong winds and heavy rain come after months of generally dry and settled weather.
A review of October’s weather released by the Jersey Met Office yesterday revealed that the month was drier and much warmer than average.

The average daily temperature was 14.2°C – 1.1°C above the long-term average and much warmer than the same month last year.

Rainfall was well below average for the third consecutive month. Only 73 mm fell during the month, well below the average of 92 mm.

Despite the weather being drier and warmer than normal, the amount of sunshine was slightly below average.
