A £30,000 bonus for ruining the waterfront

Monday 9th November 2009, 2:59PM GMT.

From Angela Macdonald.
THE report on States Question Time (JEP, 4 November) revealed that the managing director of the Waterfront Enterprise Board received a £30,000 bonus last year, bringing his earnings up to £270,000.

For doing what? Ruining our waterfront. This man already earns a ridiculous amount of money. Did our government really need to give him a bonus, especially as at the time we were heading into a recession?

There are many people in Jersey who are finding it difficult to make ends meet, yet here we go again handing out money to those who are already in a comfortable position.

To cover all the daft things the government are doing with public money, we are now having increases in alcohol, tobacco and fuel, and tax allowances have been frozen. What’s next?

Does the Chief Minister and Senator Ozouf not listen to the news or read their local paper? Many of us are very unhappy with the way our government is treating us and there are some families that are being helped by local charities, as they are finding times hard.

Also there are hard-working men and women employed by the States who have been refused a pay rise, which I have to say would not even cover the cost of living in Jersey but what does our government do? They just go and give £30,000 away.

The Council of Ministers really don’t care. Why should they? They don’t have to worry about money and making ends meet, do they?

If the writer of this letter has her facts correct then I am disgusted.I only have access to the JEP website but one of the leading articles today highlights the amount of local families seeking financial help this Christmas.Perhaps the MD of WEB who has received this enormous bonus on top of his already massive salary would like to donate it to the Jersey Charities Christmas Appeal.Furthermore it used to be that a bonus was a reward for outstanding work but obviously not anymore!

Is this true? If it is it is disgraceful. I think he should give his bonus to help those in need over here. It would go a long way for them.

The waterfront is a shambles in my opinion and how anyone can be getting paid for this is beyond me.

Would it be possible for the JEP to investigate this and then write about? Valid news in anyone’s book if it is true.

Meanwhile, as women continue to be violently abused, there is no cash for the refuge!

    The waterfront?

A cinema and swimming pool that looks like its built from cardboard and ugly.

An hotel that got the worst building of the year.

Now they are building flats with retail on the ground floor. You need to look at Spectrum to see that this will fail.

    £30,000 bonus…..

Sorry young Tiny Tim you are not getting the turkey this year as we need to pay Ebenezer.

    ‘…tax allowances have been frozen’

Yes they have but since they were reducing under 20 means 20 this means that they will keep their allowances, at a higher level, for longer. This move therefore benefits taxpayers paying the standard rate of tax.

Incidentally, the threshold before taxpayers pay the marginal rate of tax is increasing so those on lower incomes are better off.
