STRONG winds and pouring rain did not stop Islanders coming out in force to pay tribute to fallen soldiers during the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph on Sunday.

Fortunately for the 1,500 people who lined the streets and both sides of the Cenotaph to watch the service, the rain stopped in time for the beginning of the ceremonies.

The laying of the poppy wreaths preceded the march-past, which included a number of war veterans, who were applauded as they went by. After the Last Post was sounded just before 11 am, there was a two-minute silence. That was brought to a close with a saluting gun and the notes of the Reveille.

The first poppy wreaths were laid by the Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway, the Bailiff, Michael Birt, Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur and the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft.

The Deputy Bailiff, William Bailhache, Jurats of the Royal Court, Crown Officers and States Members were also at the service, which came on the day that another British soldier died while serving in Afghanistan.
