RESIDENTS of a St Helier care home have won a prestigious national competition.

St Ewolds’ Gardening Club scooped the £2,000 top prize in the B&Q One Planet Living Award Competition.

Advertised in one of the national newspapers in May earlier this year, the competition caught the attention of the residential home, who submitted a detailed report to the judges explaining how the home would use the money to enhance their surroundings and outside areas in an environmentally-sustainable way.

St Ewolds impressed the judges with the developments that they wanted to make. The money has been put to good use by the gardening club who have bought a gazebo-style shaded seat with trailing roses, bird boxes and buddleia bushes to encourage insects and butterflies.

The home also plans to buy awnings for the residents to enjoy sitting in the sunshine. With money left over, they intend to create a herbal aroma garden and install water features to provide an area for residents with communication difficulties.

Ann Mclean, St Ewolds home manager, said: ‘The money is going to enhance the quality of life for the residents and the look of the environment around us.’
