JERSEY’S war heroes – including two soldiers who died during the troubles in Northern Ireland – are to be remembered through a special memorial.
The names and pictures of the fallen are in future to be projected on to a screen in Liberation Square.
The new memorial was due to be unveiled today, but due to unforeseen circumstances its launch has been postponed until Liberation Day next year. It is expected to form a feature of Remembrance Sunday from next year.
Town centre manager Richard Mackenzie, who came up with the idea, said: ‘It is going to be a living, breathing document and we are hoping to set it all up for Liberation Day and then use the slide show twice a year. ‘
‘I think that it should be all-encompassing. I think it is very important that we remember those who died, as there were something like 1,800 people from Jersey who died from the Island in the First World War. For a small population like Jersey that is a huge number of people and large chunks of the same families sacrificed their lives.’
