YOUNG Jersey vicars are facing smaller pensions and longer careers after the Church of England gambled their pension pot in shares that plummeted in value.

All churches have been warned that they will have to contribute more to compensate for the £350 million deficit.

The Dean of Jersey, the Very Rev Bob Key, said that he accepted that the recession contributed to the problem but pensions must be secured for younger Jersey vicars. ‘Pension schemes are being reviewed in many walks of life,’ he said.

‘The contributions reflect the increased costs and the fact that we are all living longer, which is a good thing.’
