Croatian Matea Mezak won the women's tournament
CHRISTMAS came early for tennis fans at Les Ormes yesterday as they were treated to a world class display in the men’s final of the Caversham International.
In what was heralded by many as the greatest international final ever seen in Jersey, the ATP Challenger title went to Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen as he got the better of Stephane Robert in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Tournament organiser Hugh Raymond said: ‘That was without doubt the best final we’ve ever had. There was a great atmosphere and it had everything, the only thing missing was a tiebreak – it was incredible.’
In the women’s $10,000 ITF final Croatian Matea Mezak kept her cool to beat rising star 16-year-old Timea Babos (HUN), in her second final against the Croatian in as many weeks, 6-2, 6-3.
