ISLANDERS who put in many hours of effort to create the recent successful production of Cats at Fort Regent are hoping that theatregoers will nominate them for a national award.

Nominations for the 2010 Whatsonstage.com awards have already opened and Jersey is eligible to be chosen for the best regional production.

Selina Burby, one of the show’s organisers, said: ‘The Cats production is eligible for awards at the London event and it would be great if enough people who watched the show in Jersey and Guernsey voted so that the production team could win one of these awards.

‘It would give real credibility to the show and the work that the team are trying to do in the Channel Islands, and it could help with raising sponsorship for future shows.

‘It is not financially viable for the production team to stage another show without local support, and it would be a real boost for the Channel Islands to feature in a ceremony of this nature.’

She added that the local choir and the Jersey children, who were the ‘kittens’ in the show, put in many hours of rehearsal time. They ranged in age from eight to 14 and included children from local dance schools.

There was also a storyteller, seven-year-old Jessica, who is Ms Burby’s daughter. The youngster, who is deaf, was on stage for the whole show and loved every minute of it, according to her mother.
