DOCTOR Lee Durrell joined pupils at Jersey College for Girls for a performance of the musical Ocean World at the college last night.
The performance, which was also staged on Wednesday evening, featured the school’s orchestra, chamber choir and the whole of Year 8.
The musical was narrated by Dr Durrell, who is the honorary director of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. It tells the story of the birth of a humpback whale born in tropical seas which journeys with its mother to the North Atlantic, but whose survival is threatened by pollution and over-fishing.
Head teacher Carl Howarth said: ‘The sheer scale of this event is staggering and the huge number of students involved reflects their commitment to changing the way we treat our planet. Telling this message through music combines the ecological theme with the college’s musical strength.’
JCG head of music Phillippa Le Feuvre added: ‘This has been a tremendously exciting and challenging project, and we are very grateful to Lee Durrell for agreeing to narrate. The meaning and theme of the musical are given added depth by her presence. The students have worked so hard and we are delighted with what they have achieved.’
