A sneaky reverse into road tax

From Chris Whitworth.
ALTHOUGH I’m not and never will be a fan of the many oversized gas guzzlers driving around our small Island, I cannot agree with Housing Minister Terry Le Main’s proposal to introduce an annual charge on all cars based on engine size.

This is a very sneaky way of reintroducing road tax, which was replaced by the more equitable fuel tax surcharge. This surcharge, which raises around £20 million per annum, adequately addresses any environmental issues, as the more fuel you burn the more tax you pay.
However, if environmental concerns were the real issue here, then the gas guzzling large trucks, boats, planes and even private generators would also be targeted.
Therefore, to charge someone £250 for just owning a vehicle, whether it is used much or not, is totally unfair and does nothing to reduce emissions.
I realise that in the present climate, the States need to think up ingenious new ways of acquiring our hard earned cash, but by trying to pull the wool over our eyes while excavating our near empty pockets is despicable.
