Artist Jason Butler with Colin Powell

Artist Jason Butler with Colin Powell

A UNIQUE public servant credited with the success of Jersey’s finance industry has been honoured with a specially commissioned portrait, which was unveiled yesterday.

The Jersey Heritage portrait of Colin Powell was revealed by Joe Moynihan, the president of the Jersey Bankers Association.

Jersey artist Jason Butler painted the portrait, which he started working on in May. Mr Powell is the latest Island figure to be honoured as the subject of the annual Heritage portrait. Previous subjects have included environmentalist Mike Stentiford, former teacher Bob Le Sueur, Occupation historian Michael Ginns, former Constable Iris Le Feuvre, community worker Daphne Minihane, former trade union leader René Liron and former entertainer Teddy Noel.

Mr Powell, who is the chairman of the Jersey Child Care Trust and was made a CBE in 2005, said that he was ‘tremendously honoured’ and ‘very surprised’ to be asked to be the subject of the Heritage portrait.

We have all taken photographs of friends and loved ones and upon review (particularly in the pre-digital photography era) have managed to cut off the top of a head of missed an arm but can somebody tell me why this happened on a painting?

Having seen the painting on television there appears to be a lot of space at the bottom of the canvas (where Mr Powell’s shoes are) but he has the top of his head missing (and the photograph above clearly demonstrates Mr Powell has a full head.

This rather major point aside I quite like the picture, it is a clearly deserved recognition of Mr Powell’s contribution over the years. Hats off to you Mr Butler!

Typical! Getting £800,000 of taxpayers money to bail them out of financial trouble and they waste money on a painting. I don’t care if this portrait was paid for by the finance community they money it cost should have gone towards essentials such as keeping our historic open and people in jobs!

The artist, Jason Butler, is certainly very talented, so I should think it’s for effect.

I know Jason is a very talented artist, but why the top of his head has been cut off I really don’t know.

Perhaps Jason ran out of canvas, perhaps the painting suffered an accident in the faming workshop, perhaps Mr Powell walked under the rotating blades of a helicopter prior to posing, perhaps Jason can give an explanation.
