THOUSANDS joined the queue yesterday lunchtime as the annual Shelter for the Homeless Soup Kitchen raised a record £10,464.
The line of people patiently waiting for a mug of hot soup and some bread stretched from the Royal Square as far as HSBC Bank. They were all taking advantage of what co-organiser Michelle Cuthbert described as ‘perfect soup weather’.
‘It’s been phenomenal,’ she said. ‘Every year we get amazing support and it looks like we’ve had even more people here than last year. Some people came along to get 30 soups for their offices.’
Forty-one different soups were available, all provided by restaurants and companies, and every customer was also given a hunk of bread. The recipients were asked to donate a minimum of £2 for each soup, with all profits going towards the running of the shelter.
