Deacon in debt

Nicky and the Rev Malcolm Salmon

The Rev Malcolm Salmon with his wife Nicky

A DEBT-ridden deacon is facing the threat of UK bailiffs after leaving Jersey owing almost £20,000 for a convertible car, a flat-screen television and other unpaid bills.

The Rev Malcolm Salmon spent seven years working on the Island’s Methodist circuit and became a popular figure while working in societies and church youth clubs. But while preaching the words of the Bible, Mr Salmon was taking out huge loans and credit agreements which he could not afford to repay.

In autumn last year the clergyman faced his first petty debts court action after his promises to pay off a large petrol account proved to be far from gospel. And ten months later, after failing to pay off his account, he moved to a Methodist circuit in his home county of Cornwall and left behind an even bigger trail of debt.

Are the JEP planning to report on all islanders who find themselves in debt? Statistics for December 2009 show that the average household debt in the UK is £21,210 (based on the number of households who have some form of unsecured loan). This is hardly news – let alone front page news.

Forget why is this front page!! The question should be why is it even news worthy!!

Its somebody else private financial problems, which unfortunately is very common now days.

Is the JEP going to start talking about every Tom, Dick & Harry with a money problems!!

Our JEP reporters are really digging the barrel for news these days. Someone left the island with a trail of debt. So what? This person isn’t the first to do so and I doubt he’ll be the last. I’m sure the JEP could be reporting far better stuff than this!

I would imagine he is one of many that have left recently leaving huge debts behind them. Just because they represent a church – does not mean they are credit worthy.

Well they say god looks after his own.
Perhaps the aformentioned gentleman required a widescreen tv to watch the pope in all his HD glory.

The convertible was needed to wave at his flock.
At least thats my excuse. In any case Jersey is after all “Life Enriching” and they worship the golden calf as seen in west centre so as they say when in Rome.

Dredging the barrel here aren’t we. Why are you delighting in someone’s personal debt problems regardless of who he was or what position he held.

Surely it just proves he had human failings like everybody else. He probably caught the Jersey disease of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ and materialism.

    Hardly newsworthy!

Can someone please tell me why this has made the front page. I am sure that he is not the only one who is currently in debt. Just speak to Citizens Advice.

To make fun of the person and increase his misery by trying to be clever with words “after his promises to pay off a large petrol account proved to be far from gospel” does not seem very charitable.

Perhaps the JEP should have done some more investigations before printing this story.

In the season of goodwill the JEP should demonstrate a little more compassion.
