Stick to road checks

From Brian Villette.
I’M sure Peter Tabb (JEP, 24 November) would welcome the introduction of an annual test for tens of thousands of cars as this would put hundreds of thousands of pounds in his association members’ pockets.

From a personal viewpoint, I feel this would be as open to corruption as the MOT is in the UK, probably more so. My suggestion is that on an Island of nine miles by five, let’s stick to honorary police road checks, more frequent if necessary. I would say that on a tiny Island like this you can’t escape for ever if your vehicle is defective.

If indeed, 40 per cent of vehicles registered in Jersey are over ten years old, does this not tell Mr Tabb something? Next he will be suggesting that a scrappage scheme be introduced in an attempt to put more money into his members’ pockets.

However, this will only achieve one thing – putting a car out of a lot of people’s reach, as it is doing in the UK.

Hence, 40 per cent of cars over ten years old – people can’t afford, or don’t want, a new car over here.
