You need facts to make a decision

From Jill Shenton.
A MOTHER’S letter (JEP, 28 November) criticised my son, Senator Ben Shenton, for speaking the truth.

There is great concern about Tamiflu. But as Ben has rightly pointed out, it should be up to responsible parents to decide for their child.

I do not know how many children Helen Nicolle has, but if this is her first, then welcome to the club of parenting. As a mother of four grown up children and seven grandchildren, let me tell her that there are many decisions to be made in their lifetime.

We never had the benefits of parenting classes, nursery schools, household help or a second income. My husband and I decided to put the children first.
I stayed at home to care for our children and he went out to work to provide for them. We have been blessed with a family to be proud of.

As a family, we have never decried the benefits now available to all. But nothing should replace the parents’ right to decide what they feel is best for their child.
My advice to Helen is to read the article again.
