Candlelit vigil for Copenhagen deal

Friday 11th December 2009, 2:59PM GMT.

Organiser Maria Barnicoat

Organiser Maria Barnicoat

ISLANDERS are invited to take part in a worldwide vigil tomorrow to mark the midpoint of the Copenhagen summit on climate change.

By gathering in the paved area opposite the Town Hall at 5.30 pm, people can join a mass event that will be mirrored in over 2,000 places around the globe.

Organiser Maria Barnicoat explained why she felt it was so important for Jersey to show solidarity with the 130-odd countries taking part.

‘Each one of us makes a difference,’ she said. ‘Whether it’s the little changes we are making in our lives to support our environment or whether it’s standing up for what we believe to be so important for our future.’

Considering that the main causes of Global Warming\Climate Change or whatever it is called this week are methane and water vapour. Lord Monckton’s presence in Copenhagen has not been very well covered by the main stream media. Funny that eh?

No doubt we will have any scare story in two years time to worry about…

When will people understand that global warming is around for one reason only. To tax! If there wasn’t away to make money on it, it would not be a problem.

Also can anyone tell me if it was really what effect jersey would have? I believe by these scientists are yapping about, that Africa produces more than we do. And this global warming meeting is for paying the poorer countries to stop it. How about using that 1.5bn on something worth while mr brown like say our boys in Iraq rather a myth.

The world’s climate has been fluctuating between extremes since before man walked the earth. It’s the natural way of things, and nothing we do can change it. It would be supremely arrogant of the human race to assume otherwise.

The real tragedy and scandal of global warming is that it has distracted the attention of the masses from serious ecological problems which CAN be fixed or prevented by mankind.

I for one will not be wasting my time attending Miss Barnicoat’s vigil in support of a conference which, if succesful in its goal, will have no effect upon the state of the world aside from forcing unjustified rises in “green” taxes upon us.

Well this must be some sort of first for these vox pox pages. We are all in agreement as we have been able to either do some research into GW\CC, whatever, or at least be able to see through the spinned lies and be able to vent one’s annoyance at being treated like sheep. What is that phrase from the UK Government funded Common Purpose “charity” used about people, oh yes – “useful idiots”.

No wonder the powers that be are wary of the internet and wish to limit its usage – an example of this would be the “accredited media” issue.

Fairplay to Maria and can only empathise with the people who choose to carry on with their negative views and brainwashed attitudes towards making a difference.. maybe if those attitudes were to change the world wouldnt be such a miserable place.. If you maybe all adapted bit of change and open your eyes, educate yourselves, you may finds ways to live where you don’t pay green taxes.. ( which I think may be the point you are all missing)

Have any of you thought about the fact that we all continue to derive the earth of its natural resources? Water, oil, gas diamonds etc.. it does have a dramatic effect on the earth and the reasons why there are wars in the first place?

Maria well done.. at least you may be pricking the conscience of some even if they mock what valid point you are making. People shoulkd take it upon themselves to be informed of current global issues by their own research and before issuing harsh uninformed opinions to people who care about global warming.. We all take from the earths natural resources,, oil,, fossil fuels, diamonds etc but whine when they cannot take responsibility for what effect this has and its not just carbon emissions.. its what we take not just produce ;-)

Perhaps you need to understand that many of us who you consider to be mocking are adequately aware that there is a problem and realise that it needs addressing.

Our cynicism derives from an awareness of the hypocrisy which surrounds this issue.

Huge numbers of people rightly feel that global warming is being hyped up by governments as an excuse to raise taxes whilst carrying on polluting as normal. This is probably one of the surest facts in the entire debate.

None of us “naysayers” is likely to deny that mankind is carelessly pumping pollutants into the atmosphere or even making the occasional selfish journey.

What is really the issue to people like us is the hypocrisy of goverments who recklessly encourage population growth and the manufacture of totally unnecessary items whose primary function is trade. Stupid giant plastic toys, driveloid newspapers aimed at a market that is deliberately kept moronic because if they weren’t they wouldn’t buy them, tons of books that are never sold – leave alone read. Megawatts of power are wasted on broadcasting piffle aimed at keeping the population dumb…the list could go on and on.

Yet we are glibly told that the answer lies in having a tradeable carbon footprint. Note how trade is the important part of the equation!

No prize for guessing who will be the winners and losers when this “trade” gets going.

Like Leah Holmes, I decided that I would not be helping the world by bringing more children into it. I am almost certainly a lot older than Leah and made this decision in the mid 1960s. Yes, even then, plenty of us could see the way things were going. Even people whose eyes were shut had them opened by writers like Rachel Carson with “The Silent Spring”.

Please would all critics of those of us who are suggesting that there is more than one way to skin a cat understand that we are quite aware that mankind is polluting the place.

Nevertheless, some of us who look a little further are also aware of the additional input from Mother Nature and Old Sol (who currently, and unexpectedly, hasn’t got his cyclic dose of acne).

Lets just assume that all this global warming isn’t man made. Are the measures we are taking to stop this assumed warming actually bad?

Should we just say “well, we do use a lot of stuff, we do over package stuff, we do buy more stuff than we need and we do throw a lot of stuff away. We do use a lot of resources, we are chopping down a lot of rainforest. Maybe we should do what we can to help stop the waste, buy less stuff, demand rainforests stay, find new ways. Why should we find new ways? because we can!!”

“Lets just assume that all this global warming isn’t man made. Are the measures we are taking to stop this assumed warming actually bad?”

Of course not Joe. The trouble is that anyone who is sceptical of some of the “scientific evidence” is automatically branded as being uncaring and not interested in cutting back or acknowledging a need to stop the helter skelter ride to disaster.

Ironically some of those who think that carbon trading is the answer are appear not to be concerned about disaster, only in trade which favours themselves.

Very well said and so true.
I’m an environmentalist, however, I can see (like so many others) that this is the ‘new financial bubble’. But it’s out of our control like most other things, so let’s just remember that we (and our children) live on this planet, so we should do our best to look after it.

Lets just keep logging the Amazon etc., and turn the planet into one big desert. Lets keep pushing up the population so that big business can sell basically useless junk to be played with for 5 minutes before it is chucked into toxic landfills or burnt.

The more people you have the more taxes you can extract and the more junk you can produce and sell. Yes the future is orange. BTW there are areas increasing in size that are turning into desert in China so they will be affected just as much as the rest of us by pollution, deforestation, overpopulation, shortage of food, shortage of water etc.

Global warming is the least of our worries as far as I am concerned look at the damage to the planet and its eco-systems. However it is an easy target for governments who think Joe Public are too daft to realise the real issues. Mind you I suppose depopulation will go down like a lead ballon, especially if you are one of the ones in for the chop. Global warming is a much easier thing to sell by world government(s).

Wars also cause the population to fall as well. Another big world war could reduce the world population significantly as could a new deadly disease….

From where I am standing I can see the train running at full speed, with the driver asleep at the wheel, into a dead end. Has anyone got the same feeling about the likely future on this planet?

Truthseeker, Please seek out the truth

    From BBC:

“The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency said China’s CO2 emissions had risen by 9% last year, compared with 1.4% in the US.”

“He pointed out that much of China’s emissions growth was being driven by consumers in the West buying Chinese goods, and noted that China’s emissions per person were still well below those of rich nations. It is estimated that the average American still pollutes between five and six times more than the average Chinese person. ”

“”All we’ve done is export a great slice of the West’s carbon footprint to China, and today we see the result.

“Let us not forget that the average Chinese emits just 3.5 tonnes of CO2 per year, whereas Britons emit nearly 10 tonnes and Americans 20 tonnes.”
