CHELSEA fan Calvin Haycock could not hide his delight when he met one of his football idols.

The 15-year-old De La Salle College student, who has leukaemia, was invited by the Teenage Cancer Trust to a presentation in Harrod’s department store in London to meet Chelsea’s England star Frank Lampard.

The midfielder was laser-signing gold-plated iPod Touch devices to raise funds for the charity.

Calvin was selected for his dream event because despite often being very tired by his treatment programme, he has been regularly fundraising for the Teenage Cancer Trust Jersey Appeal.

Calvin and several other teenagers in the Island who are in the same situation have been actively involved with a number of the charity’s events.

Launched in September, the Jersey branch of the trust is raising funds to build a unit in Southampton for teenage cancer patients from Jersey, Guernsey and the south of England. These units are designed with young people in mind and include computers with internet access, pool tables, PlayStations and satellite
television.

Calvin’s mother Irene said that when he received the invitation to meet Frank Lampard a few days before the event, he was thrilled to bits. Irene travelled to London with him and when they arrived at Harrod’s Calvin met other teenagers who had also given the trust their support.

‘Calvin couldn’t believe that he was meeting Frank Lampard in real life,’ said Irene. ‘The football star was quite shy but very friendly and accommodating, and he was very happy to have his photograph taken with his young fans and to sign Calvin’s football shirt.’

Calvin was able to tell Mr Lampard that he would be seeing him again in February because the Rotary Club of Southampton have arranged for him to visit Chelsea Football Club and meet the team.
