THE National Trust for Jersey are hoping Islanders can find a space under the tree this year for a few presents with a difference.

They want Islanders to buy anything from a roll of wallpaper or a tile to a tonne of flagstones and some horse hair to help them finish a major house renovation project.

The items are among many needed to enable to trust to finish the restoration of 16 New Street, a fine example of an early Georgian St Helier town house next to de Gruchy’s department store

However, anyone interested in helping will not be able to simply pop down to B&Q to buy any of the long list of materials. Among the things on the Christmas wish list are rolls of hand-printed wall paper at £900 a go, 18th century Delft tiles costing £100 each, cast-iron railings at £87 each and a tonne of Swanage stone for the floor of the main hallway priced £1,500 a tonne. In all, the cost of items on the list comes to £250,000.

Charles Alluto, the chief executive of the National Trust for Jersey, explained that the vast majority of the money used to renovate 16 New Street had come from a bequest. So far, £1 million has been spent, but the pot is in danger of running dry.
