Sunday 27th December 2009, 6:00PM GMT.

The shocking terrorist outrages carried out against America on Tuesday 11 September 2001 will for ever be ingrained in the memories of millions of people worldwide who watched the atrocities unfold live on television. In Jersey it was no different. Three days later, the Island joined in a nationwide two-minute silence and act of remembrance in the Royal Square with the American and Jersey flags fluttering side by side at half-mast on the skyline.

Islanders joined in the mourning felt by the rest of the world after the shocking terrorist attacks against America and huge loss of life suffered on September 11, 2001.

The event dominated news headlines worldwide and is what 2001 will be most remembered for.  But there were  other memorable events during the year, including the publication of the Clothier Report; the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the UK; a visit by the Queen as part of her Golden Jubilee tour of Britain; the unveiling of a bronze cattle sculpture in West’s Centre to celebrate Year of the Cow; and the end of West Park Pavilion.

A review of the decade, plus a look back at the devastating 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, a full entertainment guide, cartoons of the decade, a suggested walk for the holiday, a news quiz and crossword can all be found in the JEP’s special Boxing Day edition on sale all this week to raise money for the Joint Charities Christmas Appeal
