THE runway at Jersey Airport has reopened, having been closed after heavy snow fell this morning.

Steve Read, terminal and security manager, said that people should check in as normal today and contact the airport directly if they had any queries.

Earlier today, passengers faced delays or cancelled flights as several UK airports were closed because of the freezing conditions.

Light snow and ice also brought chaos to Jersey’s roads, despite warnings that bad weather was on its way. Apart from St Michael’s, all schools were closed after Connex cancelled the school bus service. Of the sceduled servies, only routes 1, 15 and 18 were running, although they were not all covering their full routes.

Education director Mario Lundy said he would be liaising with the Met Office, TTS and Connex, who run the school bus services, throughout today in order to decide as soon as possible if schools would reopen tomorrow.

Several events have been cancelled because of the weather, including the Jersey Green Room Club’s pantomime Robinson Crusoe. The club had said earlier this morning that the show would go ahead.

JEP report says “Light snow and ice also brought chaos to Jersey’s roads…”

Er… exactly where was the chaos? I didn’t see anyone struggling at all on my way into work this morning, unlike the bout of snow we had a few weeks back where a few 4x4s were experiencing some difficulty. Another no news day?

I live very close to the Airport. Heavy snow is a bit of an exaggeration. Any excuse not to go to work seems to be OK. It is time that Jersey learns to cope with these very minor problems without having hysterics, closing schools and driving into walls (at least one accident was drink related). We were told that this snow was expected so why were the gritters not out early to cope with the rush hour.

Rediculous – what would Jersey folks do if faced with a major crisis – say like an invading army – give up without even a shot being fired?
