Cover-up job: The scene this weekend at Bolleville, near La Haye du Puits in Normandy
THIS is what the Island narrowly missed on Saturday night as heavy snow brought northern France to a standstill.
Cherbourg, Carteret and virtually all the neighbouring French coastline was blanketed with up to 20 inches of snow which local forecasters had predicted was due to fall in Jersey on Saturday. However, a slight increase in temperatures meant that it fell as sleet and rain in the Island.
But Jersey’s Met Office is now predicting that we could see the heaviest snowfall yet tomorrow morning. Wet weather is on its way and it will depend on
the air temperature and the general conditions as to whether it falls as snow, sleet or rain.
The conditions are putting a strain on Transport and Technical Services, whose staff have been working round the clock to keep the Island’s main roads as clear as possible. More salt has been ordered and is on its way from the north of England after supplies locally have run very low.
