In what appears to be a rather unfortunate programming clash, the Arts Centre and the Opera House are both due to stage productions of Romeo and Juliet next week.

The Oddsocks production of Shakespeare’s most celebrated love story is on at the Arts Centre between Monday and Friday, while the more traditional production at the Opera House by TNT runs on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

It is not the first time that the two playhouses have vied for dominance in St Helier as the ancient houses of Capulet and Montague did in the Bard’s Verona.

Last year, they both staged productions based on the 1980s hit TV show ’Allo ’Allo.
Zoe Faulkner, the marketing and publicity officer for the Opera House, said that double billing was simply an unfortunate clash and insisted that the two venues did talk to each other.

She said that Islanders were getting value for money for the grants of public money paid to both theatres. ‘We do try to prevent this from happening, but it does,’ said Miss Faulkner. ‘There are a number of different points that make this a positive.’

ONE booking centre for all island venues – that owuld also stop classical concerts competing on the same night.

There’s less cash around, what’s the point of causing each other problems – also JADC and Green Room – why same panto dates this year?

NB Shouldn’t the Arts Trust or Development officer (who we’re still paying for) have some overall view…what do they do???

If my home town (population: +/- 100,000) can run a central bookings diary to avoid clashes such as the one described here, why is it beyond the wit of either the parish of St Helier, the local newspaper, or the States, even, to do likewise?

More to the point, both of the producers should have got together and sorted this out months ago. It’s not as if Jersey was some huge metropolis. Perhaps that is “not the Jersey way”?

On the other hand when will you next get an opportunity to compare two different productions of a great play? Modern interpretations of Shakespeare take great liberties and this could be a fascinating comparison. Think of it as a wine tasting.

More of the same (shows) please!

It could have been been worse.

Just imagine if it been two productions of “The Little Shop of Horrors”.

On second thoughts, that could never happen as they all lend each other the same man eating plant.
